Water filtering and Shopping

Hi Gang.

Many of the people who are predicting collapse are predicting that the first line of attack is the water supply.

So, what do you do if the water supply is tainted?

Well, that sort of depends on WHAT it is that is in the water.

There have been several attacks on the computer system forcing the release of chemicals (particularly chlorine) into the water. MOST of these chemicals will off-gas into the air if allowed to sit for 24-48 hours, but not all.

I have been using the Brita pitcher for a while now, and it does a fair to middling job of removing the chlorine taste from the water. According to the test data, its pretty good at removing the other particulates.

I previously used a Zero Water pitcher. It was supposed to remove more of the “stuff” but I found that the water did not have a good taste, it was just … “off”.

But what do you do in a “grid down” situation?

The Berkey Big Berkey is supposed to be very good, but it claims cannot be verified, so its illegal in California. I could give a rats patootie about Cali, but the fact that the claims are not verified bothers me.

And its $400.

I have seen ads for a competitor, the 4 Patriots Ultimate blah blah.. Whatever. Its $200. It’s a gravity fed multi filter system just like the Berkey, and half the price.

There are a number of DIY solutions.

  2. https://youtu.be/_gx2nDtEDXo
  3. https://youtu.be/lGw0AVV5Hek This is a make your own filter solution. I think the order is off- I think sand, charcoal (not the commercial crap), sand, pebbles, rocks, some sort of leaf filter.
  4. https://youtu.be/rjEb5zRPPx8 CitiPrepping is a good source.

I also found a good article on how to save money grocery shopping.

I would add that a dehydrator is an inexpensive solution to storage. A freeze-dryer is better, but they are MUCH more expensive.
