Firearms practice in difficult times- part 1 of 3- Background of what you are training for.

Hi gang—

SHORT Training drills to maximize skills when ammo is restricted or expensive.

Ok, we are all PAINFULLY aware of how expensive ammo is (when we can get it).

So how do we do some training when ammo is scarce or expensive?

The number one thing—DRY FIRE.

But what? Dry fire is fine, if you know what you are trying to achieve.

What CAN we achieve? Primarily gun handling and to some extent, accuracy. So what should we do dry?

Lets look at some important skills for defensive shooting, and to know that, we must know what happens in a real life violent encounter.

1-      You are likely to be surprised. Bad guys do not pick times and situations where you are prepared or it is convenient. They pick times when the kids are screaming, your hands are full of groceries, you can’t remember where the car is, it is raining and your spouse just called to say they are home and wondering where you are.

2-      It is likely to be short. Either you will win (and survive) in the first few seconds, or you will be on the losing end. Average is 3-5 rounds, so yes, that J-Frame revolver will work. Is it the best? Probably not, but there are circumstances where a revolver shines.

3-      They are likely to attack from an odd angle. Behind or a rear quartering angle. 5:30 to 7:30 is optimum because that is where it is hardest to see them.

4-      The distance will be short. 95% of law enforcement shootings are at 7 yards or closer. 50% are 3 yards or closer. Some 30% are close enough that powder burns are a thing (1-2 feet). Civilian shootings are even closer. A large number- probably better than 50% - will be happening at a distance that is close enough for you to determine when they last brushed their teeth solely by smell.

So, surprised, fast, close, and behind.

Hint: Your rifle skills are nice, but you are much more likely to need pistol skills.

That’s all for tonight folks.

As usual, if you like this, feel free to share this.

Jason
