Situational Awareness

Hi gang.   Situational awareness is a buzzword these days. Worse so after the attacks going on worldwide.   So what is situational awareness? Simply put, it is paying attention to your surroundings, and anticipating what can go wrong and what you can do.   It is FAR more important than going armed (though that is not always the worst thing). And if you are not paying attention, being armed will actually be a hindrance.   So, lets start with the basics. 3 questions to ask yourself whenever you are some place, going someplace, or planning to be there. Where can a threat come from? What is my escape/safety route? What can I use to fight back against any threat? There are 3 main threats to contemplate. While it is popular to talk about active threats, lets talk about the most likely threats. Fire Medical emergency THEN AND ONLY THEN active threats.   Fires are a big problem this time of year. Here is a video by the nati...

Firearm Maintanence

Hi gang.   I know, its almost spring planting time, so I am working on some of those. I have also made contact with a fire fighter, and I am planning interview him and get some fire prevention and fire fighting tips, much like the 4 part series I did on plumbing.   But I have not done that yet.   Today, I am going to talk about firearm maintenance. The information about the schedules is coming from a number of sources, the information about breakage is coming from BattleField Vegas (BFV). Battlefield Vegas is a range that rents machine guns in Las Vegas. They go through a LOT of guns and parts.   RIFLES ARs have a very specific maintenance schedule, and if you keep it up, it may well last for near infinite time and rounds. AKs have a limited lifespan, no matter what you do, but they can be fixed, its just much harder. Most other platforms are closer to the AK than to the AR.   The AK is relatively simple. Lube it up, and change...

Water filtering and Shopping

Hi Gang.   Many of the people who are predicting collapse are predicting that the first line of attack is the water supply. So, what do you do if the water supply is tainted? Well, that sort of depends on WHAT it is that is in the water. There have been several attacks on the computer system forcing the release of chemicals (particularly chlorine) into the water. MOST of these chemicals will off-gas into the air if allowed to sit for 24-48 hours, but not all. I have been using the Brita pitcher for a while now, and it does a fair to middling job of removing the chlorine taste from the water. According to the test data, its pretty good at removing the other particulates. I previously used a Zero Water pitcher. It was supposed to remove more of the “stuff” but I found that the water did not have a good taste, it was just … “off”.   But what do you do in a “grid down” situation? The Berkey Big Berkey is supposed to be very good, but it claims cannot b...
